Toxic chemicals in clothing dyes raise a significant concern due to their potential negative impacts on the environment, human health, and animal welfare. Here at HĀNM, we steer clear from these fast fashion, low-cost practices.
... so, what are they and what makes them so bad?
1. Azo dyes: Azo dyes are a class of synthetic dyes that can release aromatic amines, some of which are known to be carcinogenic or have harmful effects on human health. Azo dyes are often used in clothing, particularly in vibrant and intense colors. Our dyes are all azo-free.
2. Heavy metals: Some clothing dyes contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury, chromium, and cadmium. These metals can have serious health effects, including neurological damage, organ toxicity, and even cancer. Heavy metals are commonly used in dyes to achieve bright and long-lasting colors.
3. Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is used as a fixing agent in clothing dyes to improve colorfastness. However, it is a known human carcinogen and can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems, and allergic reactions.
Here at HĀNM, we steer clear of this which is why sometimes, our dyes may run if washing instructions are not followed correctly. But you can rest assured it's better for your health, as we don't use Formaldehyde.
4. Chlorine bleach: Chlorine bleach, often used in the dyeing and finishing processes, is a highly toxic chemical that can harm both human health and the environment. It releases harmful byproducts, including dioxins, which are persistent organic pollutants with serious health and environmental consequences.
These toxic chemicals pose risks throughout the lifecycle of a garment, from production to disposal. They can contaminate water sources, harm biodiversity, and have detrimental effects on workers in the textile industry.
By avoiding toxic chemicals in our dyeing process, we demonstrate our commitment to producing sustainable hijabs that prioritise the well-being of the environment, our customers and our workers.
