The Palestinian keffiyeh, also known as a kufiya, is a traditional headdress worn by Palestinian men and women as a symbol of Palestinian identity and solidarity. It is a square scarf made of cotton or wool, typically featuring a distinctive black and white checkered pattern. The keffiyeh has a long history in the Middle East and has been worn by Palestinians for generations.
There is only one remaining factory that makes original Palestinian keffiyehs, in Palestine, which we always encourage people to support. They are known as Hirbawi.
The keffiyeh holds significant cultural and political importance for Palestinians, symbolising resistance, nationalism, and solidarity with the Palestinian cause. It gained international recognition during the Palestinian struggle for independence and has since become a powerful symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance against Israeli occupation. Whilst the red and white woven kefiyyah is most commonly worn all over the Arab region, the black and white keffiyah is often referred to as the unofficial Palestinian flag.
The keffiyeh has also become a popular fashion accessory around the world, worn by people of all backgrounds as a sign of support for Palestinian rights and solidarity with the Palestinian people. It has been embraced by activists, celebrities, and individuals seeking to raise awareness about the plight of Palestinians and advocate for justice and equality.
In recent years, Palestinian designers and artisans have also started to modernize and innovate the traditional keffiyeh, creating new designs and styles to appeal to a broader audience while still honouring the cultural significance of this iconic garment.
Here at HĀNM, we were passionate in releasing our own capsule collection inspired by the original Keffiyeh. In our dedicated support of Palestinian resistance, we like many, hope to see a free Palestine in our lifetime.
As a brand, we have been sponsoring orphans since 2014 from a percentage of sales across all our collections (read more here).
From our LEVE PALESTINA capsule collection, we intend to donate solely to the Palestinian cause.
